Allergies – HOLD

Though allergy season is in full bloom, there is no need to despair.  In Chinese Medicine, an allergic reaction to airborne pollens and mold is considered to be due to an attack of “wind.” This is very much like when we catch a cold – the signs and symptoms can be quite similar.  Due to our immune system being weakened, and perhaps coupled with a stiff neck and shoulders, we become vulnerable to a myriad of allergens.

Allergy shots and medication do provide symptomatic relief but do little to produce a resilient immune system.

How does this health paradigm work? The use of very fine Japanese needles, PAINLESSLY inserted, frees the blockages that cause stagnation.

Think of those knots in your shoulders as closed gates in a canal: if the gates are shut the water – or in this case the body’s circulation – is greatly impeded (see illustrations). The normal healthy flow of circulation that is ultimately trying to reach the lungs, face and throat has become blocked.

The second part of this equation is that the immune system must be strengthened, so that we become impervious to the plethora of mold and pollens abundant from spring into fall.

One of the best ways to build strong immunity is the use of moxa, a plant substance that is burned above the skin and on the handle of an acupuncture needle, giving a very pleasant warmth. This modality is called moxibustion. (Each modality I use has a specific purpose, which will be explained in future articles.)

Scientific studies have shown that moxibustion has the following attributes:

  • increases both red and white blood cell count
  • increases cellular immunity
  • encourages alkalosis and discourages acidosis
  • regulates blood sugar levels-great for diabetics!
  • liver function is enhanced and urobilin levels are decreased
