Moxibustion plays an integral role in the art of acupuncture. The dried plant called “moxa” is commonly used by burning it directly on, or just above, the skin. It warms the body and enhances circulation.
Patients love the relaxing effects of the heat and the pleasant aroma. When we use needle moxa (which involves burning a ball of compacted moxa on the handle of the needle) a very deep heat is experienced. If we are using needle moxa on the low back, many patients will report feeling the warmth penetrate into the lower abdomen.
Scientific studies have shown that moxa increases cellular immunity, regulates blood sugar levels and positively affects both red and white blood cell levels.
